Old West Statement on Horse Welfare, Integrity, and Responsible Competition
As we prepare for the upcoming Old West event in Heber City, we want to address a topic
that is important to our competitors, owners, trainers, and the future of our industry.
While Old West does not currently have a formal drug and medication policy in place for this
year's event, we want to be clear about where we stand.
The Old West team strongly discourages the use of any mind-altering substances,
performance-enhancing drugs, excessive stimulants, masking agents, or products intended
to artificially influence a horse's behavior, performance, or sensory perception. This includes
the use of ear drops, ear treatments, or any other substances intended to diminish or alter a
horse's ability to hear, respond, or compete naturally.
Our industry is built on the athletic ability, training, genetics, and heart of the horse. We
believe success should be earned through horsemanship, preparation, and integrity4not
through chemical shortcuts or practices that compromise the welfare of the animal.
Every competitor who enters an Old West event shares a responsibility to protect and
promote the reputation of the rope horse industry. The decisions we make today will shape
the future of our sport and how it is viewed by our fans, sponsors, families, and future
generations.
As an organization, Old West is committed to developing and implementing comprehensive
horse welfare and medication policies in the future. Until those policies are formally
adopted, we ask every participant to hold themselves to the highest standards of honesty,
sportsmanship, and stewardship of the horse.
At the end of the day, our greatest responsibility is to the horse. Their welfare, comfort, and
well-being must always come before competition. Drugs and abuse will not be tolerated.
Thank you for helping us preserve the integrity of the sport we all love.
